Chandragupta was an adventurer rather than a king. He began with almost no army. However, with this army he seized the region of Magadha just south of the lower Ganges and then steadily conquered the whole of the Ganges basin.Chandragupta Maurya had started his empire.Marching westward, he quickly conquered the whole of the Indus Valley, and eventually gained Gandhara and Arachosia (the mountainous region west of the Indus) after defeating the Greek rulers of Persia and Bactria, the Seleucids.
Of the great conquering kings of the Maurya Empire, the only one we know much about is Asoka.Asoka kept careful records of his edicts, so we have an excellent source for the history of his reign.

From this reading I learned many htings. One of the things I learned is that the culture of India was ancient and dynamic entity. I also learned that natural barrier was the most striking element of Indian geography. THe continental plate of India and Asia met and this formed the mountain ranges. This was the cause of many mountain ranges to form in India. I also learned that the largest peninsula is the southern part of India. It is flat land and it gives India many opportunities for harbors. The last thing I learned was that because of this, Indians had a bigger contact with foreign people.

Chandragupta Maurya had gained control of an the area ranging from Bengal in the east to Afghanistan in the west and as far south as the Narmada River. I learned that Ashoka was one if the famous ruler of India. In 254 B.C., Ashoka had monumental edicts on Buddhism carved into rocks and caves throughout his empire. One recorded his sending of religious messenger to the Greek rulers of Syria, Egypt, Macedonia, Cyrene, and Epirus.  Then after thirteen years later, he issued seven additional edicts carved into strategically placed polished sandstone pillars. Ashoka also built  84,000 stupas to enshrine the relics of the Buddha. Then he recorded the key events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, which is the founder of Buddhism. I think that they admired more Ashoka cause he was one of the greatest ruler in India.

Chandragupta was known as Sandracotta to the Greeks. He had conquered a large area from Bengal in the east to Afghanistan in the west and as far south as the Narmada River by 303 B.C. His prime minister and mentor Kautilya was part of the reason of Chandragupta’s many successes. The name of his son was Bindusara and he extended the empire into central and parts of Southern India. Ashoka was the third Mauryan emperor. He ruled from 273–232 B.C. He is one of the most famous rulers in India’s history. He supported Buddhism.  His support for Buddhism was often affected by the affect of the Romans emperor Constantine the Great’s acceptance of Christianity in 313 A.D. Ashoka had monumental edicts of Buddhism carved into rocks and caves throughout his empire. He built 84,000 stupas to cherish the relics of the Buddha, honoring important events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama who was the founder of Buddhism.
