What natural resource was commonly used in 1908?

The resources that was used were flutes, coal gas, and branches. The coal gas was used to burn the branches so that they could cook food and stay warm at home. They used flutes to entertain themselves while they were at their houses or on the street. But of course, the flute wasn't bought. The people from 1908 had to make the flutes. You couldn't have bought anything because there were no  stores.
